Preferred Future Based On Combined Key Themes

This chart acts as a scenario validation tool, that reflects the scenario matrix developed during the Think-Tank workshops. Survey respondents were asked to react to the following macro themes, which are the axis on the scenario matrix.

  • DEVELOPMENT TRAJECTORY – Traverse City is the focal center of the region, and is attracting new investments and developments. New developments can alter the character of a community, and bring both new opportunities and challenges. What do you think should be the approach to dealing with future development in Traverse City? SCALE: 1 = Let the market dictate development and infrastructure; to, 10 = Proactively guide and manage development and urban design
  • COMMUNITY DIRECTION – Traverse City is becoming increasingly attractive for visitors and new residents. This is being accelerated by more remote-work patterns, and people having more choice where they live. Climate change is also beginning to drive retiree populations to look to the north. These types of changes can alter local issues such as affordability and demographic make-up of the community. What do you think should be the approach to dealing with community direction in Traverse City? SCALE: 1 = Let the community naturally change and evolve as the population demographics shift; to, 10 = Intentionally invest in retaining and supporting a balanced and liveable community.

Survey participant responses were then plotted over the scenario framework matrix. The larger the bubble, the more responses selected on that point of the chart.

Key things to note:

  • There is a significant response to see Traverse City to move toward the upper right quadrant, which is a future that is driven by a combined focus on a ‘Regional Approach – Intentionally invest in retaining and supporting a balanced and liveable community’; and ‘Proactive Design – Proactively guide and manage development and urban design’.
  • The data shows a very significant appetite for moving in this preferred direction. This reflects the results from the Think-Tank.
  • This chart can be filtered (on the right hand side) to allow you to explore responses by different cohorts.
