Big Idea #1: North-South Trail Connectivity

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan survey has been exploring the desire for trails network in Smithville. This builds on the Comprehensive Plan, which highlighted that current and potential trails networks were a key part of the future ‘value proposition’ for Smithville as a community.

The Parks and Recreation Master Plan survey has been exploring the desire for trails network in Smithville. This builds on the Comprehensive Plan, which highlighted that current and potential trails networks were a key part of the future ‘value proposition’ for Smithville as a community.

What we know so far from the surveys (for Comp Plan and P&R Master Plan) includes:

  • There is desire for an ambitious trails program, with majority of people wanting a full connected internal system within next 5 years, and the balance within 5-10 years.
  • People wanted Smithville to be thinking very bold – ‘think big and out of the box – create something unique’
  • There is a clear desire for a complete separation of trails from road network.

The overall North-South trail connectivity, and the East -West (Lake through Downtown), are the key arterial components of a proposed future trail network. The diagram below was developed during the Comprehensive Planning process and shows the planned main regional trails. We are now exploring how Smithville can build in more local trail connectivity and link key parts of the community infrastructure within the city.

We would love to hear your thoughts!

Tell us what route you would like to see in a main North-South trail corridor – what route do you think is essential, for example should it run through Downtown; connect to the school; and / or include the Lake?

Would like to see the north anticipated trail connection snd Rocky branch be the next primary focus. Follow that with the west connection of Main Street trail.

The consulting team is interested to know your preferred routes within your City and how you would access your key destinations using alternative modes of transportation. This will assist us in developing a map and establishing priorities. We look forward to hearing from you!

Smithville has a huge opportunity for an integrated Trails network. This has been highlighted as a priority in the community visioning, the Comprehensive Planning work, and now in the community survey on the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Looking froward to hearing community views on the where this North-South trail should run and what it needs to connect together!

This is such a cool and amazing idea!! Let’s make this happen!! Us Harborview/Grayhawk/Rollins Landing folks would LOVE to see this become a reality!!
