Respondents were asked an open-ended question: What new opportunities do you think Jasper should focus on creating?
Survey respondents were most enthusiastic about opportunities for the City to increase restaurant, dining, shopping, and local food options, as well as providing more entertainment for teens, youth and young professionals, especially in the evening hours. Respondents frequently called for higher paying jobs (especially professional and white-collar jobs), more educational opportunities and economic diversification so as to not rely only of a few major employers. To retain young families and workers in Jasper, affordable housing development was seen as a key opportunity, including amenity development in the areas of parks, trails, outdoor and aquatic facilities. Many respondents indicated a desire for more locally owned businesses downtown, mixed-use development, and an active downtown beyond business hours. Often connected to downtown development, respondents proposed more festivals, events, arts programming and cultural activities. Respondents also see an opportunity in promoting Jasper as a destination city by leveraging parks, arts, events, and strengthening community identity and branding.
