Topic 9: Integration into Healthcare Settings

Integration into healthcare settings

"What degree of integration into the healthcare system do you think is necessary for the chiropractic profession to receive parity with other healthcare professions?”

Integration into traditional healthcare settings, multidisciplinary practices and VA hospital settings were seen by many Future Perceptions Survey respondents as critical to increasing patient levels and compensation for chiropractors. To what degree of integration do you consider this necessary to accomplish desired levels of compensation?

Chiropractic clinicians, researchers, and academicians must be integrated into medical schools, hospitals, medical clinics, community health centers, and the rural health centers.

Full integration, or at least the opportunity to fully integrate. I am on staff (as a referring associate) at the local hospital and has made other healthcare providers more comfortable with me, so that they now refer regularly – although not as much as they should. This also improves the standing of the profession with the general public.

We HAVE to be on par with other health professionals. We need to be a regular part of the health care continuum. DCs need to be in hospital systems. End of story if we are going to survive.

Chiropractic usually has a different desired outcome for patients than hospitals and traditional medical care. Rather than Chiropractic being bent from a promotion of health model into a treatment of disease model I would like to see Chiropractic align with others who have the same paradigm. I could see multiple professions that promotion health create alliances in hospital or larger integrated systems .being beneficial.

Having the opportunity, while not forcing it is optimal. There are venues where this is happening, in VAs for instance. It is also important to recognize that chiropractors may not desire to be forced into a medical/disease focused model. There are already for decades examples of programs that have developed of integrative health programs. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America is one example where chiropractors on on the team and care is provided as appropriate.
